Visit Mount Airy

Griffith bought the house the first time he had any real money and raised his two children there, Basnight said. He said he was shocked to learn the house would be demolished. "I always assumed the property would be eventually preserved and opened to the public," Wood said, saying he thought it might be maintained like Elvis Presley's property Graceland in Memphis, Tenn.

You can tour the town in a vintage squad car, see a replica jail, and enjoy places that remind you of Mayberry. The shop is both a fully-functioning barber shop and tourist draw. Stop by and meet Bill, son of original owner Russell Hiatt.

Almost a dozen local musicians were on stage with their fiddles, guitars, and even a bass or two. There was a loose agenda, and each took turns leading a variety of gospel, country and bluegrass tunes. A variety of singers were called up on stage throughout the two hour program, which added to the character and entertainment of the evening.

"I had really sort of always thought it would be secured," she said. "I imagine Cindi has her reasons, and I don't pretend to know what they are," Wood said. "It's a beautiful bit of property with a lot of memories attached to it. I just hope they're not moving too fast." Many of Griffith's older friends met him while they worked in "The Lost Colony," an outdoor drama that tells the story of the 1587 colony on the North Carolina coast that mysteriously disappeared. "We compared notes," Long said in a phone interview from his studio in New York City. "I had to fit mine into an existing museum. I told him, if you're doing yours, you can make it however you want it."

Remembering Andy Griffith, Roanoke Island's Most Famous Resident

The home is available as a rental, which would be a cool experience for anyone who is a fan of "The Andy Griffith Show". Though she played the role for five years, Lynn's Thelma Lou only appeared on 26 episodes of The Andy Griffith Show between 1961 and 1966. The show went on for two more seasons after her final episode. In 1986, Lynn rejoined the cast for the reunion television movie Return to Mayberry, where Thelma Lou and Barney Fife got married. His incredible rise from early childhood poverty drew clichés like “grit and determination,” and there was that, but there was nothing clichéd about this American original. He was deadly serious about being funny as all get-out in his own way, making big money with it, and giving back to his island.

We visited the world’s largest open face white granite quarry. It seems Andy Griffith wasn’t the only prosperous resident of Mt. Airy. Named after Episode 18 in Season 3, where Sheriff Andy and Deputy Barney discover a local goat has eaten a case of dynamite, this pub is relatively new to the Mayberry scene. Griffith wanted the museum to include items from his TV shows, along with memorabilia from his music career, Long said.

He loved the gentle, slow-boat pace of the island, where he could pop in at a friend’s house and he and his buddy would break out their guitars and tall-boy Budweisers, porch-strumming and talking for hours. He was, by turns, good, generous, ornery and thrifty, and he often quietly helped underdogs like he had been. He demanded loyalty but was rarely cynical and often optimistic, retaining a wide-eyed, curious wonder about the world—and was sometimes, even into his last years, naïve.

Tony Award-winning costume designer William Ivey Long, whose parents were friends with Andy, recalls a conversation he had with Griffith in 2007 in which Griffith mentioned his hope that the house could be preserved as a museum. Andy's Homeplace

Andy, “Doc” Harvey, and their sons at the Oregon Inlet Coast Guard Station in October 1968.His memories of working in that play were the anchor to which he kept returning. During his six-decade career, he caught countless red-eye flights east from Los Angeles, headed home from the city where he made his living to the island that gave him that living. For the Mayberry fan, there is no other place to experience Mayberry but in Andy Griffith’s own home. Guests can stay in the Mount Airy home where the Andy Griffith actor lived during his adolescence until his high school graduation. The house contains antiques and is decorated in a 1930s-1940s style with Griffith memorabilia. Lynn, a Kansas City, Missouri native, died this October at the age of 95 after a short illness.

I suggest binge watching old episodes of The Andy Griffith Show before your trip. There are so many subtle nuances of Mt. Airy embedded into the series, you won’t want to miss them. On my next stop in Mayberry I might explore the modern version, where the Yadkin Valley wine region is blooming, and the locals are expanding their entrepreneurial ventures from Mayberry to Merlot.

The Andy Griffith Experience

If you want to experience the essence of the Andy Griffith show, Mayberry is the place for you. Many people come to visit, but what better way to get the full experience than by sleeping under the same roof as Andy Griffith did. Guests can stay in the Mount Airy Home where the Andy Griffith actor lived during his adolescence until his high school graduation.

FYI….two of the boys were actually in a bluegrass band called “The Dillards.” Their Andy Griffith appearances boosted the bands career. Straight from the hills, the Darlins brought mountain music with them whenever they came to Mayberry. Sister “Charlene” sang while the four brothers played.
